Designing games for new experiences
Suruchi Soren has worked as a Researcher at Fields of View in Bengaluru, Karnataka (India). She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion and Lifestyle Accessory Design from National Institute of Fashion Technology in Gandhinagar and a Master’s degree in Toy and Game Design from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. She has worked in the role of UX/UI Designer as well.
Coming from a small town of Rourkela in Odisha, her interest in design and art sprouted because of cartoons and anime. Taking up Craft Documentation helped her learn about her Santali culture. Her graduation project was about helping young adults engage with the constitution called Solemnly Resolve. The project helped provide a safe space for young adults to voice out their opinions without any name calling, petty arguments or judgements accompanied by a facility to be well informed with facts. Suruchi ended up developing it as a board game which can further be played on an online multiplayer platform. She has redesigned “Made to Order” (Fields of View game) to make “Weight of Labels”. She has used the “Walk of Privelege” exercise to create an impactful game. She is a keen learner who wishes to learn all aspects of design. Further she was involved in a project to develop fonts for Santali language.
As a designer Suruchi believes that design has the potential to alleviate problems. Having immersed in a documentation project about Indigenous toys and games, she wishes to illustrate a book about the same. She regards design as a tool that can help preserve and disseminate the oral traditions of Indigenous communities through publishing, illustrating, filmmaking etc.
