Context

Tribal peoples constitute 8.6 percent of India’s total population, about 104 million people according to the 2011 census (68 million people according to the 1991 census). This is the largest population of the tribal people in the world with705 communities recognized by the Government of India as Scheduled Tribes.

Each tribal community is culturally rich and diverse with unique visual, material and metaphysical culture who have been leading sustainable lifestyles in their respective geographies, often being the guardians of nature and natural resources as much as the guardians of rapidly disappearing art and craft forms.

Tribal Heritage of India Fashion Design Contest

The Tribal Heritage of IndiaFashion Design Contest aims to create an awareness about the rich textile tradition and heritage of the various tribal communities of India. The contest also seeks to promote and popularize the material culture of the tribal communities.

The Tribal Heritage of India Fashion Design Contestis created to encouragestudents, professional and emerging fashion designers to create contemporary designs that represent the culture and ethos of tribal communities in a thoughtful and sensible way, being mindful of the various dimensions of Cultural Misappropriation.

The Tribal Heritage of India Fashion Design Contest hopes to nurture creativity and natural aptitude for fashion design while providing opportunities of exposure for the designers and their work, especially the young and emerging ones.

General Guidelines

  • The competition is open to all citizens of India – students, designers aspiring designers and professional designers.
  • The design crated should not be just token, e.g. traditional motifs on the collar, pockets of cuffs, but the culture and the ethos of the tribal community should be at the core of the design concept.
  • While the contemporary, innovative and practical designs are encouraged, the design should clearly bear the tribal cultural context to the selected tribe.
  • Designs eminently wearable, practical, comfortable, non-toxic; yet aesthetically appealing are encouraged.

Criteria for the Selection of Winners

The Tribal Heritage of India Fashion Design Contest shall tap highly qualified adjudicators to select the winners from the submitted entries according to the following criteria:

  • Strength of the concept and inspiration of the design  
  •  Appropriate use of the tribal materials, technique and know-how
  • Originality and Creativity
  • Process of design development
  • Wearability
  • Quality of presentation (through sketches and renderings)

Awards

  • First Prize: Cash prize of 25,000
  • Second Prize: Cash prize of 15,000
  • Third Prize: Cash prize of 10,000
  • Seven Additional prizes of gift hampers of assorted products designed and crafted by indigenous entrepreneurs
  • Top 10 will be provide with Certificates

Important Dates

  • Registration for this edition is now closed.
  • Preliminary screening, documentation and jury process is underway.
    The timeline for this process will be communicated to all participants who have submitted entries by 15 Nov. Those participants who do not receive a mail by 15 Nov can contact shweta@tribaldesignforum.com for further query.
  • Announcement of the winners will be announced at an online Award Ceremony on 26 January 2023 on the occasion of the Republic Day of India.
  • The winners will be announced on www.tribaldesignforum.com and on Instagram @tribaldesignforum.

How to Participate?

  • Identify the tribe that you would like to draw your inspiration from.
  • Understand the uniqueness of the tribe’s visual and material culture.
  • Conceptualise and visualise a collection that embodies and powerfully represents the culture and ethos of the tribal community that you draw inspiration from.
  • Create a series of sketches and renders through which you can clearly represent the collection that you have conceptualised, not limited to – the front view, the rear view and the side profile view, each on a separate sheet of A3 landscape format (420mm x 297mm).
  • The format of submission in the form of a template will be provided to all registered contestants on or before 15 October.
  • Prepare a Word document that contains the name of the tribe depicted, elaboration of your design concept with along with your full name, postal address and contact number.
  • All submissions are to be placed in the template (provided on or before 15 October) and submit to fashion@tribaldesignforum.com latest by 05 November 2022, 2100 hrs. along with the Word document.
  • The entries should be submitted only after registering through the process mentioned above. Entries submitted without registration will not be accepted.
  • The contestant may submit a maximum of three (3) entries

Rules of Participation
Eligibility

  • The competition is open to all–
    students, designers aspiring designers and professional designers.
  • Competitors should be Indian citizens.

Technical Guidelines

  • The entry should be the contestant’s original design and concept
  • The entry should NOT be in any way appropriating the culture of the tribal community that the collection is INSPIRED from.
  • The contestant may submit a maximum of three (3) entries

Rights and Reproduction

  • Any moral and paternity right regarding the project sent in for the contest is the designer’s property. 
  • However, by submitting an entry in the competition, the participant agrees to give Tribal Design Forum the first right of refusal to the exclusive use of the design concept. This option is valid until 15 November 2024.
  • All participants agree to allow their entries to be published or showcased by Tribal Design Forum in print, online and electronic medium where it deems fit to promote Tribal Design Forum or the Tribal Heritage of India Fashion Contest. 
  • Tribal Design Forum retains the right to publish the submissions and information associated with them and the participants in all communication exercises for Tribal Design Forum campaigns.
  • All participants agree to allow registered members of Tribal Design Forum to use their pictures for editorial, academic and non-commercial usage, provided due credit is provided to the designer.
  • Any employee or agent of the Organisers will NOT be liable for:
    • any costs incurred/loss/liability suffered by participants in relation to the programme
    • any lost expectation of profits by participant
    • any failure by participant to understand their rights in relation to Intellectual Property or the rights of the Organizers in relation to Intellectual Property
    • any other benefit applicants may expect to gain by participating in the programme

Terms and Conditions

Tribal Design Forum may change the Terms and Conditions of participation at any time without specific notice. The amended Terms and Conditions will be effective immediately upon being posted on www.tribaldesignforum.com and Tribal Design Forum social media.   • The decision of the judges will be final and not appealable.
